The Magicians - Season 1
The show pivots around Quentin Coldwater, a bright and broody man-child whose imagination has long been owned by a children’s fantasy: an obscure book series called Fillory and Further, about kids who commute between their war-torn here and an enchanted over-there via a grandfather clock. Quentin enrolls at Brakebills College for Magical Pedagogy to be trained as a magician, where he discovers that the magical world the book is real and poses a danger to humanity.

The first two episodes are solid, giving us the glimpse of the potential for the series to develop into something thrilling, dark and entertaining.January 25, 2016
In terms of establishing a world and getting the plot going, the show's first episodes are actually pretty promising.December 17, 2015
It would take a clairvoyant to know whether The Magicians will eventually develop into an agreeably dark and twisty piece of juicy genre fare, but at this early stage its future looks murky.December 28, 2016
Part of the fun of the series is how it challenges the idealized portraits of young heroes in fantasy literature with characters plagued by the same bad decisions, hormonally-charged emotions, and selfishness and pettiness of any college kid...January 25, 2016
The result ends up feeling like a knock-off of the genre works that inspired Grossman, lacking in the wry commentary that made the original books feel so fresh.January 25, 2016
Even as a genre fan, The Magicians compels me less for its supernatural side than its feel for the social alienation that makes fantasy so appealing in the first place.January 25, 2016
So far, it holds enough tricks - and more of an adult edge - to be intriguing.December 21, 2015
The television show, anxious and impatient, rushes through the bullet points of the book's plot and forgoes the emotional complexity that made the books more unique than just the Potter imitation they seem at first blush.December 21, 2015
Magicians is just the latest attempt to conjure up something special. The new series is about a magical school for wizards, but it's not Harry Potter's Hogwarts. Not even close.
